Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky of the 9th district of Illinois has repeatedly called for more gun control since the terrorist attacks stating “we should make, as a top priority, reducing the easy availability of the kinds of weapons that can and have been used in mass shootings.” on her own website press release dated November 16th. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky was also calling for more gun control on Sirius XM radio stating “I think it ought cause us to have another consideration of sensible gun safety laws.”
Because Ms. Schakowsky is my congresswoman I have communicated with her numerous times. I will say upfront that while most of my other politicians whom I write often as well, her replies seem to not be canned template responses. Her responses seem be be direct either by her or one of her staffers, even referencing previous emails in her correspondences. Therefore I shall be writing another letter to Ms. Schakowsky, as follows:
Ms. Schakowsky ,
I write to you in response to your calling for sensible gun laws in the wake of the Paris terror attacks. I have once heard of another Illinois politician stating “Never let a good tragedy go to waste.” and while I did not verify the authenticity of this quote, I did think you were above the practice.
As I have previously told you, I feel you are an intelligent person. Otherwise how could you have risen to the seat in which you find yourself today? However it frustrates me when I hear or read you calling for more gun control. The exact words posted on your website in regards to the Paris tragedy state “If we are to address violence, terrorism and security at home, we must enact sensible gun safety laws.”
As a constituent of your district I request you to elaborate. What gun law, sensible or otherwise, would have prevented this tragedy? We don’t know the origin of the firearms used in the attacks, however we do know they did not come from France because France has banned these types of firearms. What sensible gun laws would you enact in the United States which would have prevented this mass attack by terrorists?
Let’s expand upon the proposals thrown about by anti gun (dare I say Anti Freedom?) politicians…
Universal Background checks… Would a back ground check stop a prohibited person from obtaining a firearm? No, because it does not work now. Straw Purchasers buy and sell firearms and pass back ground checks. Criminals steal firearms. The study between Duke and the University of Chicago in conjunction with the Cook County Jail system concluded that criminals don’t obtain their firearms legally.
Would an all out 100% gun ban work? Absolutely not, and France is proof. Their all out ban has failed their citizens. Criminals will always have weapons of evil (including explosives, which terrorists actually utilize more than firearms.)
The Taliban was known for crafting AK 47’s on mountain sides with rocks and hammers. Philippine gunsmiths make firearms in the jungles with hand tools such as files and hack saws from recycled metals. You can not un-invent technology which has been around for hundreds of years. Finally guns can be smuggled across borders, as they were in France.
I please ask you to lay out what “sensible gun law” would have stopped the France terror attacks?
