District 99 to Protect Students with Armed Guards

In an email, District 99 Superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele states…

Dear Friends of District 99,

Once again, all of us at District 99 are saddened by terrible violence, this time at Santa Fe High School in Texas this morning. As this news unfolds, we think of those impacted and reflect on how we can prevent such an awful event from happening in Downers Grove.

Three months ago, we shared with you a detailed list of our safety practices at District 99. You can find them here. In addition, enhancements are being planned to include:

We have created a new position, Lead Campus Security, to lead and supervise the campus security teams of both buildings and work closely with the School Resource Officers (Downers Grove Police Officers) stationed in each school building. This will be an armed security position, which requires that the person hired must be a certified police officer and pass a rigorous screening process.
We are installing a buzzer system entrance at each of our schools, which will prevent visitors from gaining immediate entry into our school buildings. These systems will be in place for the start of the 2018-19 school year. In addition, with the passage of the Master Facility Plan, we will be creating air-locked vestibules that will further fortify entrances.
We have several other security improvements under development which will be introduced and communicated to you this fall.
These events are felt and not forgotten here at District 99, by our staff–and our students. We are taking every action we can to ensure the safety of everyone in our school community. As we reiterate in all of our messages about safety, it is up to each one of us to ensure the well being of one another and to keep our schools safe. We know that people who are at-risk of hurting themselves or others often show signs and signals before an act of violence takes place, which is why we have our Anonymous Alerts reporting system during the school year. See this page for details.
Thank you for your support as we improve our buildings and procedures to achieve our mission in providing a caring–and safe–learning environment for everyone.
Thank you,
Dr. Hank Thiele
